C20th Fashion History 1940s
These wonderful Pattern Cutting Design Fashion Pictures are vintage Fashion Designs
and Pattern Cutting instructions c1948 from my collection. The fashion pattern
cutting magazine aimed to give general dressmakers instructions in good
pattern drafting cuts following an up to date
fashion silhouette line of the day.
All thumbnail images enlarge into A4 size pages for personal use only
printing and study. I've cleaned any background clutter so you can
really see the silhouettes, fashion detailing and have one pattern
draft to one page only.

Here are just the pattern drafts for the garment styles shown above.
Do remember to use a modern block or sloper tailored to today's thicker
waisted, fuller busted figure. Thumbnails enlarge to A4 and will
be less squat when enlarged.

This particular 1940s fashion designing edition contained
many
pages with individual drawings, plus the complex pattern cutting drafts and
written text. The actual date of the images bought from a 93 year old
woman is unknown other than that the book is from the late 40s. I would
estimate the designs at between 1948 and 1951, but many would look
acceptable up to 1955. All thumbnails enlarge to
become full A4 pictures including the actual pattern drafts which I have
rearranged a single sheets for each design.

It is worth noting that these designs show tentative steps to introduce the New
Look in some versions with the fuller skirt, but many have that late
forties look especially the wide shouldered coats. There was
resistance to the New Look in Britain as the government denounced it
as wasteful of fabric. Women in Britain were still on clothes rations
and cloth was still scarce. What fashion sewing material was available
was used to boost British export fashion sales abroad. I think
they are very representative of fashion styles c1948-1949, some were
worn by visitors to the
London 1948 Olympic Games.
