At your convenience, be able to read many pages from www.fashion-era.com all in one go. My ebook aims to give information about changes in the body silhouette created by the use of under foundation garments. The chapters highlight the importance of structured undergarments in capturing a new look or trend for various eras from ancient to modern times. An extra chapter gives you direct links to quality internet suppliers of lingerie and swimwear.
My ebook looks at ways of understanding how to spot gradual changes in the body silhouette over various fashion history eras through observing the subtle changes in undergarments. The ebook moves lightly from Cretan to Georgian times and shows in more depth how to tell the differences between panier, crinoline, bustle and Sbend styles.
Chapter 1 The first chapter looks at the early development of corsetry from Crete to Medieval and C16th iron corsets, farthingales, bum rolls and boned stays.
Chapter 2 C18th Paniers follows the development of the sack dress, styles of panier hoops and developments to the polonaise of 1772.
Chapter 3 Stays to Corsets covers the differences between stays and their replacement garment of corsets by 1840.
Chapter 4 Crinolines shows how to recognise the changes and developments of the crinoline. The Victorian era is dominated by the crinoline and the bustle under foundations, but spans 64 years making dating costumes in photographs and paintings an often arduous task. This chapter starts with the Horsehair Crinoline Petticoat of the 1830s, moves through developments to the Cage Crinoline of 1856, and other variations on the crinoline styles merging into the polonaise and tournure. This will enable you to recognise the Victorian outer garments worn over the foundation more easily and help you with dating items.
Chapter 5 Bustles explains exactly how to differentiate between the first and second eras of bustles 1870 & 1883. For many newcomers to costume, understanding the two quite different bustle eras is a daunting task unless clearly explained. I show how the silhouette changes chronologically so that you can see which outer garments match which under bustle period.
Chapter 6 Edwardian Corsetry defines the importance of the mature Edwardian figure and how the Health corset and fashion for the S bend shape and monobosom happens. It looks too at the second main silhouette of the Edwardian era and the corsets the helped achieve that contour post 1907 and 1911. It also adds some commentary about corsets by the famous writer Veblen.
Chapter 7 Bras and Girdles Before 1950 examines the roots of the first brassiere 1907, early brassieres pre 1915, cup sizes, bras and girdles after 1930.
Chapter 8 Bras After 1950 looks at the silhouette of sweater girl glamour of the 1950s, the 1960s and the changes in lingerie that followed to the luxury of silk teddies of the 80s through to the Ultimo of bra of the millennium.
Chapter 9 Drawers to Knickers explains why nether region cover was needed and how women adopted pantaloons. It looks at later developments from Victorian drawers to combinations and Knickers and the knickers and panties of today.
Chapter 10 Rational Dress Reform had an effect on terms related to underwear such as bloomers. So this chapter looks at the contribution of Amelia Bloomer 1818-1894, the Rational Dress Society 1881 and cycling dress, Dr Jaeger and his sanitary woollen underwear and how all these fashions eventually contributed to early versions of female Swimwear.
Chapter 11 has a look at Other Underwear which includes the Chemise, the Chemisette, the Camisole and the Petticoat. This section has some great advertisement pictures of underclothes from 1953.
Finally Chapter 12 has a selection of Lingerie/Swimwear Internet Links showing lists of suppliers of bras, lingerie, plus size underwear and swimwear that are best viewed online.
