Englishwomen's Dresses and Their Construction C.1660-1860: Patterns of Fashion 1, Vol. 1

Both of these volumes written by the master the late Janet Arnold are two of my all time favourite books for understanding the complexities of costume construction.

There is no doubt they are in a class of their own and have yet to bettered.

Engishwomen's Dresses and Their Construction C.1860-1940: Patterns of Fashion, Vol. 2
Engishwomen's Dresses and Their Construction C.1860-1940: Patterns of Fashion, Vol. 2

The sister book is where you will find patterns for the typical mid/late Victorian dress styles.  Great bustle patterns in this volume. Both books show patterns laid on a 1 inch scale grid. The patterns have detailed instructions and little drawings or explanatory notes that most people with a sound understanding of dressmaking would understand.
