Fashion Silhouettes 1942 - Timeline Drawings
For this webpage I have drawn some 1942 fashion styles showing elements of
silhouettes found in old magazines such as Le Petit Echo de la Mode, Butterick
and McCall's pattern books of the day. I have redrawn them in my own style then
finally enhanced elements with computer software.
These silhouette costume drawings show just some of the body shape outlines found in 1942
creating costume history detail which also makes them very useful when dating
the fashion history line of vintage dress. Costume drawings, magazine
covers and fashion plates of 1942 all equally act as a source of inspiration for
making your own drawings. Like many costume enthusiasts, I sometimes need a basic
costume history line image for a specific year. These 1940's fashion
illustrations should give you a clear understanding of the changing lines and
variety of silhouettes. As a result you can date a picture within a few
years.
Each thumbnail enlarges to produce an A4 print
and is suitable for colouring in and producing timeline scenes, collage
foundation guides or guidelines for amateur dramatics.
You may use these 1942
fashion history silhouettes below in personal school or college class
projects, but they must not be reproduced in printed book
form matter, as greetings cards, gift wrap etc., nor used as part of any electronic material such as a
CD, DVD, TV show, videos, YouTube topic/video, ebooks,
websites or similar.

In 1942 styles began to show even more restricted used of fabric and military
styling is very evident.
My original detailed text information on the 1940s can be
found in the main section in Utility Clothing
and there are many more 1940s images including the
1940s fashion plates.

1942
Simple classic boxy suits and shirtwaist dresses were favourite
styles for daywear in 1942.
Wartime weddings in Britain were often hurried events. A
serviceman came home on 24 hours or 48 hours leave before a
long posting away and a 'let's do it now' wedding was often
quickly arranged with a special marriage licence.
World War II brides frequently wore recycled wedding gowns to
save both coupons, money and time. This wedding dress style
shown left was typical of 1942 with the sweetheart neckline
and simple slim body silhouette shape was seen throughout
the decade. It is quite similar to the dress worn by
H.R.H Princess
Elizabeth at her wedding in 1947.
Brides also utilised bridesmaid's dresses worn previously by
other family or friends. As time passed flowers in short
supply were replaced by muffs or heart muff cushions. See old photos and read about
real
1940s weddings.
Guests pooled together precious rations like sugar to help
make a wedding cake and wedding receptions were frequently
held in a parental front room or were just a drink in a
local pub.
